i happened upon the intro to big band drumming by bobby gabriel that henry II found online. it's a great book. it boosted my confidence (cuz i can't read that well) and secondly, i found that i could apply his foundational approach to any context of music. a great book. good play along tracks as well.
thanks you guys for all your insights. this is one genre that i still feel is an 'everest' for me.

As an elementary school teacher--grade four--I teach reading to kids all morning long. I also teach the ELL (English Language Learners) as well.Reading doesn?t mean to bury your head into the music, any more than being able to read a STOP sign doesn?t mean you would study that at the expense of all other data/stimuli while driving ?--PE
By fourth grade, the students who are "burying" there head in the text do so because their skill level at decoding the letters is not complete. They can't decode much meaning when they are still sounding out the word. In short, there is little flow to their reading.
The simple truth is they haven't the skill to flow or read the passage as intended and in turn miss the main point of the text--to understand the passage as the author intended.
Until they have developed the needed skill to decode, they will never really understand the text fully. And now we return to the most fundamental principle in learning: humility--the effort needed to seek first to understand through rigorous repetition.
It would be wonderful if most of us were blessed with such advanced skills to read or understand (both cognitively and physically) a given piece of music at rapid speed from the get-go?but, those individuals are far and few between. Most of us simply have to accept our Divinely appointed processing speed by working smarter, not harder in order to achieve understanding.
It is this core issue of asking, "Am I satisfied with my underdstanding?" that seperates one student from another. I tell my students all the time that their satisfaction with what is "good" is not necessarily mine. Most of us have an internal stopping point at what we accept as "good." Maybe that point is known when you get there, and in the case of Peter's analogy above, to be able to read the STOP sign with all the other data/stimuli while driving and stay in the pocket so to speak (keep the speed limit, down shift into first gear, note the babe on the corner, turn the radio station, look for oncoming traffic, change the station, take another quick babe glance, STOP, and then proceed forward again).
What fascinates me with highly developed personalities, in this case, Peter, is his development of what he saw as good early on, that is, ?good enough? to move forward with confidence all the while realizing he could always be better. This can be a tricky balance point. Don?t we all know the guy who lives in his basement with insane single stroke rolls but never plays music? He is consumed with perfection?but for what? All professional working musicians have to develop this inner confidence about moving on while still accepting their incompleteness.
